White Rabbit Node SPEC A7

Available on requestAsk

SPEC A7 is a versatile and cost-efficient White Rabbit node, available either as a standalone unit or as a NIC card with PTM support.

It delivers deterministic, low-jitter communication, sub-nanosecond time synchronization, and hardware packet timestamping (PMT) for systems with stringent timing requirements.

The device features PPS outputs, 10 MHz/TRIG, programmable RF output (10 MHz–6 GHz), digital I/O, Time of Day (ToD) IN/OUT, SFP interfaces, and USB-C connectivity.

In addition, SPEC A7 supports remote management and high-speed data exchange between the host and the FPGA.

Technical Specifications

Operating Modes

SPEC A7 is available in the following configurations:

• Standalone unit in an aluminum enclosure with basic functionality (PPS, 10 MHz, and trigger outputs only) – cost-efficient version

• Standalone unit in an aluminum enclosure with extended functionality (additional 10 MHz–6 GHz RF output, Grand Master capability)

• Standalone unit in an aluminum enclosure with management interface (RJ45 and SFP; embedded Linux)

• NIC card with PTM support, operating as a standard Linux Network Interface Controller (NIC)

• Mezzanine for the Sinara reference clock card (Wenzel_ref)

Module Features

• Dual SFP; operating modes: WR node, WR Grand Master, WR switch

• PPS and 10 MHz/TRIG outputs (default configuration)

• PPS and 10 MHz inputs (extended configuration)

• Programmable 10 MHz–6 GHz RF output

• Low-jitter PPS and TRIG outputs — FPGA signal synchronized to the main VCXO, with fine tuning via an external delay line

• Time of Day (ToD) IN/OUT via MMCX → SMA

• Linux NIC with Precision Time Measurement (PTM) support over PCI Express

• Firmware compatible with CUTE-A7 (full pin-to-pin compatibility), without NIC support

• Dedicated LiteX-based firmware with NIC and PTM functionality

• Power supply via PCI Express or DC jack (6–12 V DC)

• Passive cooling

• 64 Mbit PSRAM

• USB-C interface providing access to JTAG, serial console, and I²C

Management Mezzanine Features

• Linux SOM (i.MX93) running services such as VPN, routing between WR and external RJ45/SFP interfaces, and SNMP

• Management interfaces: RJ45 (10/100/1000) and SFP (100/1000)

• Remote board management and monitoring

Available Versions

• NIC version

• Standalone version with management module

• Rack-mount version — four SPEC A7 units

FAQ

SPEC A7 integrates seamlessly with existing infrastructures thanks to its flexible operating modes and standard interfaces:

• 5G networks: operates as a NIC with Precision Time Measurement (PTM) support over PCIe, enabling precise time synchronization in mmWave and other deterministic data transmission systems.

• Quantum communication: in combination with the White Rabbit protocol, it delivers sub-nanosecond synchronization and hardware packet timestamping (PMT), which are essential for quantum key distribution systems.

• Data centers: with RJ45, SFP, and USB-C interfaces, and the ability to operate as a standalone node or mezzanine, SPEC A7 can be integrated into existing servers, providing low-jitter clock distribution and precise event timestamping.

Remote management and monitoring further simplify deployment and supervision in distributed environments.

A White Rabbit switch functions as a time distribution hub and router within the network. Its primary role is to forward time signals and packets between nodes rather than generate timing outputs.

In contrast, SPEC A7 is an active timing node with time outputs, measurement, and control capabilities. It can operate either as an end node or as a Grand Master.
